"Why Am I Always Craving Sugar?" 5 reasons WHY and how to prevent it

One of the most common reasons people fail to reach their health & weight loss goals is sugar cravings.

At this point, you may think it's "normal" to crave sugar all the time.

I'm here to tell you that it's NOT.

I used to be a massive sugar addict and it took me YEARS to figure out how to break free from it.

It may come as a surprise that I didn't get there with sheer willpower & discipline.

It took learning about nutrition, health & understanding WHY my body was craving sugar in the first place.

Over the past 7 years I've helped hundreds of people break free from their coffee addiction and sugar cravings by addressing the root causes of their cravings.

What I've discovered is that there are 5 main reasons why you crave sugar:

  • Your meals aren't balanced

If your body isn't getting enough nutrients from your food, you will crave sugar.
A lot of people equal nutrients to a big meal and to a ton of carbs. But this is actually the opposite of what you need to feel nourished. Increase the protein, the healthy fats and the veggies while removing all processed foods. Your body was designed to eat REAL FOOD.

This is what you will get the most nourishment from, even if the marketing messages on processed foods tells you otherwise. Drop the pasta (even the Gluten Free type), the "healthy" protein bars, "low fat" crackers & other garbage and start cooking your meals from scratch. You will be surprised by how much more nourished you'll feel and how much easier it will be to come off sugar.

  • Your blood sugar levels drop

This is what happens when you suddenly start feeling really tired, a little dizzy & can't focus. Resisting the urge for sugar in these cases is nearly IMPOSSIBLE. But there is a way to avoid a drop in blood sugar levels. The first step is to balance your meals, the second is to reduce stress and the third is to increase sleep! These things ALL have an impact on blood sugar levels.

  • You need an emotional crutch

Sugar gives us comfort, excitement and warmth, and God knows that we could all do with a bit more warmth at this time of the year! This is why you're more likely to reach for sugar when you're stressed, sad, anxious or bored. Instead of beating yourself up for it, think of other ways of getting the comfort, excitement and warmth into your life that you are craving.

Maybe it's spending more time with family, making time for self-care or reconnecting with a passion or hobby you love. This sometimes requires some deeper work as it's not always 100% clear what you're seeking to fulfil with sugar. But it's so worth it! It will not only help you stop craving sugar but it will bring more balance & joy into your life too!

  • You're exhausted and overstretched

Sugar is the most readily available source of energy when you feel tired. Resisting sugar is nearly impossible when you feel tired because your body is naturally designed to crave it to keep you alive & awake! Instead of battling with your willpower, focus on getting enough sleep, on rethinking your priorities and making sure you get the rest you need to stop relying on sugar to prop yourself up when you feel tired.

  • You're not drinking enough water

So often we mistake thirst for hunger. And so often we curb the discomfort of being thirsty with something sweet instead. Commit to drinking at least 1,5 litres of water per day (2 litres if you live in a warm climate or are very active). Herbal tea is fine but coffee does not qualify as water as it's actually dehydrating!

As you can tell from the above, craving sugar is a sign that your body is out of balance.

You can keep ignoring it and risk more serious implications for your health such as heart disease and Alzheimer's (also referred to as Type 3 diabetes) OR you can take charge of your sugar cravings by taking charge of your life.
