10 Things I Had to Change to Make Peace with My Body

Mar 05, 2025

I wasn’t always the confident woman you see today. In fact, there was a time when I felt completely disconnected from my body—stuck in a cycle of yo-yo dieting, overtraining, and constantly chasing quick fixes. I felt like my body was something separate from me, something I needed to “beat into shape.”

For years, I thought the answer was more cardio, fewer calories, and stricter discipline. I pushed myself harder, believed I had to "earn" my food, and saw exercise as punishment rather than self-care. I struggled with emotional eating, bingeing, and trying to outrun my guilt by burning as many calories as possible.

Eventually, my body hit a wall. I lost my period, burnt out completely, and was diagnosed with PCOS, Candida, and leaky gut. My body was sending me clear signals that something had to change.

Here are 10 things I had to change to make peace with my body and finally step into a place of strength, confidence, and ease:

1. I Quit Dieting

Instead of counting calories and restricting, I started focusing on nourishment—eating in a way that supports my gut, balances my blood sugar, and fuels my energy. I stopped obsessing over numbers and started listening to what my body actually needed.

2. I Stopped Treating Exercise as Punishment

I no longer work out to “burn off” what I ate. Instead, I move in ways that build strength, improve flexibility, and support longevity. Exercise became something I enjoy, not something I endure.

3. I Focus on Doing Less, but Better

More isn’t always better. In fact, for years I was doing too much—too much stress, too much cardio, too much pushing. Now, I focus on doing less, but doing it better. Quality over quantity applies to movement, food, and life.

4. I Prioritize Sleep Over Exercise

There was a time when I’d wake up exhausted but still force myself to train. Now, I know that if I have to choose between sleep and a workout, sleep wins. Recovery is where the magic happens.

5. I Stopped Stressing About Missing a Workout

Skipping one workout doesn’t ruin my progress—but constantly overtraining, stressing, and running on empty does. Rest is a crucial part of any training plan, and I honour that now.

6. I Stopped Trying to “Fix” My Body

For years, I felt like my body was something I had to change, fix, or shrink. I was always waiting until I was leaner, stronger, or “better” before I could love myself. Now, I see my body as something to nurture, not battle.

7. I Learned to Regulate My Nervous System

Before, I lived in a constant state of fight-or-flight—pushing harder, doing more, stressing myself out. Now, I focus on nervous system regulation, breathwork, and slowing down, which has had a profound effect on my digestion, energy, and mental clarity.

8. I Stopped Ignoring My Body’s Signals

Bloating, exhaustion, mood swings—these were all messages my body was sending me, and I ignored them for years. Now, I listen and adjust, instead of just pushing through and hoping for the best.

9. I Started Seeing My Body as My Teammate

Instead of fighting against my body, I started working with it. Our bodies are incredibly intelligent, and they are always responding to how we treat them. When I shifted from forcing to supporting, everything changed.

10. I Made Peace with the Process

There’s no finish line when it comes to feeling good in your body. It’s an ongoing relationship, not a race. Once I let go of the idea of perfection and started appreciating where I was right now, my body responded in ways I never expected.

If you’re feeling unhappy in your body right now, don’t lose hope. I know how hard it can feel to be stuck, frustrated, and disconnected. But you don’t have to stay there. Making peace with your body is possible.
