I eat healthy all day… but raid the kitchen at night. Why?

You eat “healthy.”

You work out.

You’re in a calorie deficit.

You blame your lack of willpower. You beat yourself up.

You tell yourself if you could just fix this one habit, everything would fall into place.

But as a coach, I see it differently.

This pattern isn’t about self-control.

It’s a biological response to imbalance.

Here’s what’s likely going on:

  • 😰 You’ve been running on adrenaline all day.

Your nervous system is stuck in “go mode,” and food becomes the quickest way to force your body into relaxation — especially if you’ve had no other form of decompression.

  • 🥩 You’re not eating enough protein or stabilising meals during the day.

This causes blood sugar crashes later on — and your brain sends urgent signals for fast energy (hello, sugar and carbs).

  • ☕️ You’re using caffeine and sugar to push through fatigue.

This creates a spike → crash → craving cycle that gets worse by evening.

  • 😴 You’re under-slept.

Lack of quality sleep elevates ghrelin (the hunger hormone) and decreases leptin (the satiety hormone) — making you hungrier, less satisfied, and more likely to overeat at night.

This isn’t a discipline issue.

It’s your body crying out for balance.

And pushing harder — eating less, training more, trying to “be good” — only deepens the stress.

You don’t need another restrictive plan.

You need to understand how your body works — and finally work with it.
